An unknown poem in one of Grandma's scrapbooks

Oh, it's easy to be a starter
But are you a sticker, too?
'Tis fun, sometimes, to begin a thing,
But harder to see it through.

And sometimes failure is best
To keep you from being too sure;
Success that is built on defeat, you know,
Will oftentimes longest endure.

'Tis the sticker who wins in the battle of Life,
While the quitter is lain on the shelf;
You are never defeated, remember this,
Until you lose faith in yourself

  2. I love this poem. I feel like I'm learning so much more about her. When we were little it was all about making sure our eyes didn't pop out, being in the garden, and just hanging out with her. Now it's more like finding out about her as a person.

  3. She didn't write it. I found the original. It was printed in July, 1920 in Hearld and Presbyter by Florence Jones Hadley called "Which?" Only it's a little different. I'm not sure if she edited it, if it was given to her, or if by the 1940s it had been changed a bit.

    The original:

    'Tis fun, ofttimes, to begin a thing,
    But harder to see it through.
    If you failed some time when you did your best,
    Don't take it too much to heart;
    Just try it again in a different way.
    For it all depends how you start.

    And sometimes failure is best, dear lad,
    To keep you from being too sure;
    Success that is built on defeat, you know
    Will oftentimes longest endure.

    You may think it fun to being a thing,
    Are you game to see it through?
